Shining Happy Workers

image hosting file

Are you happy with your job? No, honestly.

I dare say must of us aren't. The only reason why we are hanging on to our job is mainly because it pays our bills. And for mid-lifers, especially if you do not possess a large piece of "toilet paper", looking for jobs in greener pasture is hardly an option. Of course, the self-employed like Chun See is out of this category. People like him are lucky - they die die also must try to like their job. ROTFL.

So, I was kinda surprised to learn that people who factor high in the Happiness Index in the office aren't really motivated by money. According to a survey conducted by the BBC, the following are what make workers happy:

  • Show of appreciation by the bosses and fellow co-workers
  • Opportunity for training
  • The social interaction with fellow colleagues

Indeed, the survey reveals that the happiest workers in the UK are the hairdressers. Reasons? They have lots of interaction with their clients. They make people look good and beautiful. And they feel appreciated. It's really all about job satisfaction.

According to the survey, the five top professions are:

  • Hairdressers
  • Clergy
  • Chefs/cooks
  • Beauticians
  • Plumbers

And the bottom five?

  • Social Workers
  • Architects
  • Civil Servants (I'll be damned!)
  • Estate Agents
  • Secretaries

You note, of course, that salary and money do not factor very much in making a worker happy. Hmmmm..... maybe our Ministers should chew on this?

As for me, I lurrve my job, and especially now for obvious reason. But of course, loving something does not necessarily make you happy, or does it? I love the SYT sitting across my desk in the office; but I'm NOT HAPPY because she gives me the cold shoulder all day. Got my drift?

Sigh. Maybe I should be a hairdresser! Got lobang for hairdresser school? I dun aspire to be the next David Gan (God forbid), but I promise not to make you look like the next Fann Wong having a bad hair day .....

LOL.

I dun have much aspirations for my kids. Of course, which parents dun wan the best for their children? But a lot of things are beyond our control. I'd be happy as long as they earn their keeps, choose the right path and by happy individuals. Maybe I'll get them to join the CS. Everytime got pay increment. Why not? LOL.

Chris,
Your bosses got increments of more than 50% and you get a measly 3-5% (er, which one?hehe... kaypoh... Eii... lunch again hor!! Call me huh! I'm on 2 months leave b4 I fly away.)

Good excuse for them to increase their salaries hor!

If you become a hairdresser, I sure become your first customer wan! Must support good friend mah! Even though I know you will touch touch me! :(

muahahahahaha.......

Eh Chris,

If you not happy with your job, I got some tips to share with you, haha:

http://www.doodie.com/anger_management.php

17 ways to whack your boss! Move your mouse over the office, whatever is highlighted can be used as a "weapon", haha!

So far, I'm quite happy in my job, lah, don't have to take such drastic measures, haha!!

Ahem, careful what you wish for... you want to be hairdresser but if you don't aspire to David Gan's standard, you might be relegated to cutting less glamorous sources of hair, haha, sorry! Couldn't help it!

ECL:

Touched you that's why kena fingers burnt lor. Who asked you so hot?

I simple man. 3-5% better than no increment at all. Woa, 2 months leave ah? Tai-tai suka suka dun have to work one. And suka suka can afford to raise her own salary also, rite? PAP wat. LOL

Chris,
Tats the beauty of being your own boss. Of course must be able to maintain this type of lifestyle lah!

Actually it is better to be in control or in charge of your own life then to let someone else do it. Tats why I can work when I want and spend as much as I want.

And can u leave some constructive comments for once arh?

You want things to return to the good old days ah? Very difficult lah.

Okay, okay, I will be constructive for once. Construct walls. Muahahaha.

I dun even know what u are rambling about. What good old days? You want good old days then visit here lah.

Okay, okay, I will be constructive for once. Construct walls.

That's the problem with you. Always building walls instead of bridges. SOM.

Evan:
That will be my second career when I retire. I mean baking, not beautifying pple. But by then hor... dunno whether kena parkinson's disease or not leh.... shaky hands still can bake ah? LOL.

Chris Sim said...

ECL:
I think it's the ultimate dream of most pple to become their own boss. But until that time comes, most of us juz have to make do with being a salaried man (that calls to mind the water man we know). This is not to say that I'm working towards being self-employed. I love what I'm doing now. And it really boils down to our mentality. Employees can be their own bosses, too. We can take whatever assignments given to us as being our own business. We are answerable to the bosses, juz like enterpreneurs are answerable to the stockholders or the customers. I do my networking and make sure I do my job well. So, in a way, I'm my own boss from that perspective.

Ultimately, "boh lui" how to set up business? You got some capital to spare or not arh? And I dun mind relocating to China leh.

LOL.

Woah I like this entry (sounds familiar eh? next time must think of something else to say), because I just tendered and thinking of what I really want to do.

Anyways, I am surprised that Sales people are not in the list of the bottom five. Coordinators also.

You wanna be hairdressr ah? but seems like most hairdressers quite guniang ley =x

Chris Sim said...

Etel:
You resigned already arh? Found a job already or not? Wat? Quit before you found a job arh? Young pple arh... why so rash? tsk..tsk..tsk.. Or are you considering becoming full time baker like Evan? Haha...

Woa, why you insult all the hairdressers arh? But most of the "guniang" are very creative and talented pple, agreed? No lah... I cannot be hairdresser. Unless there's only one universal style - BOTAK lor. That one I can do for you anytime, anywhere. And FOC some more. LOL.

eastcoastlife said...

Chris,
Seriously, if you dun mind relocating to China, I have a career in the near future for you, can wait until you retire.

I need a trusted man.

wahahahahaa

Baker? I'm not as good as her lah.. :) Gonna go uni soon.. (if I get in. =x) If not, grab myself another job & study part time..

Wah, you dont say I insult ALL hairdresser, later they set up one I-hate-Simplyetel.blogspot.com & insult me. I say MOST =x

But I agree that they are talented. Left handers also talented kay???? (I left hander) hohohohohoho

Chris Sim said...

ECL:
That means I'll be working under you arh? Or beside you? On top of you? LOL
Thanks for your very kind offer, seriously. But I dunno whether you can wait or not lah. We CS retire at 62 leh. Besides, I'm not sure if I can be trusted. I sometimes also dun trust myself.... Heheh.

Chris Sim said...

Etel:
Going Uni arh?! Good for you. You should pursue your education if you have the opportunity. Toilet papers very important in Singapore one, especially if, say, you're thinking of joining the CS. Yeah... I would encourage you to work towards getting that degree. Good luck!

eastcoastlife said...

wah Chris!
Which position would you prefer leh? lol...

I'm always on top.... becos I'm the BOSS mah!

62? You intend to work until 62? I'm offering you a career not a job!

That's the problem with most people. You get too comfy with what you have and have no more desire for excitement. ya... I know, you have a family to take care of. Who doesn't?

I invite you to China to see for yourself, then you decide, ok?

eastcoastlife said...

etel,
It's great that you are going to U. All the best, but rememeber, the piece of paper does nothing to the formation of the character of a person. You are a good girl, be your own true self and dun always be affected by people or the environment around you.

Be careful of who you mix with.

Chris Sim said...

ECL:
But... but.. you said can wait until I retire one wat. Besides, I worry if we're in a board meeting, and if I'm really bored, I'd begin to imagine my BOSS naked and do unspeakable things to her, how arh? Something you subject your staff to in this post.... I takut leh..

I juz love some of these really funny and hilarious posts of yours, ECL.

eastcoastlife said...

By the time you retire, I oso retire ah! I oso 60 then!

How to be in those positions? I dun kena osteoporosis, I oso can break my bones trying these circus stunts!

Oh, I haven't post my latest office antics huh? Will do it soon. Then I bet you will quit CS and join me. muahahahaha....

Interesting post. In general, the plumbers, hairdressers (owners), chefs earn a lot more than secretaries and some civil servants in UK.
Likewise in Australia, some blue collar workers actually earn more than some white collar employees.
